Iyad Al-Hallaq was shot dead by a police officer two years ago on the Via Dolorosa street in the old city of Jerusalem. Iyad was a young man on the autism spectrum and a resident of East Jerusalem. He was shot cold-blooded on his way to the Elvin Center for people on the autism spectrum where he would go every day.
On Monday, May 30th, two years will have passed since the killing. On that day, we will hold a memorial ceremony for Iyad in the old city of Jerusalem. We will walk along the route that Iyad took daily, through the place where he was killed, and hold a ceremony in his memory.
Iyad's death was a result of the occupation. It is the result of the military control of millions of Palestinians. Again, Palestinians and Israelis pay the heavy price of the occupation. The sign we will put will be a reminder of that, and a demand to end the occupation, and for peace for all of us.
Our leaders try to persuade us that there is no alternative to the bloodshed, but we refuse to normalize occupation, injustice, and unnecessary death. We will continue to strive and work for peace, freedom and security to Palestinians and Israelis.
