Studio Libby is dedicated to the memory of Libby Cohen Meguri, who was murdered in the Nova Festival massacre on October 7, at the age of 22.
“I’m going to dance, and if I die — keep the dance for me (libby Cohen Meguri)
The studio we are creating will serve as a rehearsal space for the company, for many of the independent choreographers working in the city, and for dance classes open both to professional dancers and to movement enthusiasts. It will be a place where people of all ages and backgrounds can dance, watch, and learn about the art of movement and performance, and encounter up close the magic it awakens in both body and soul.
Roy Assaf is a choreographer who has been making dances for over 20 years,
His works have been presented at festivals and theaters that are an integral part of the history of dance: Théâtre National de Chaillot – Paris, Sadler’s Wells – London, Jacob’s Pillow – Massachusetts, Bolzano Danza – Bolzano, Pavillon Noir – Aix-en-Provence, La Biennale di Venezia – Venice, and the 17th Biennale de la Danse in Lyon, among others.
As an independent choreographer, Assaf has been commissioned to create works for leading and influential dance companies: Batsheva Dance Company under the artistic direction of Ohad Naharin, L.A.D.P under Benjamin Millepied, The Royal Swedish Ballet under Johannes Öhman, GöteborgsOperans Danskompani under Katrín Hall, Ballet BC under Medhi Walerski and NDT1 under Emily Molnar among others.
After two decades of creating in ever-changing spaces across many cities, Assaf has found the place where he wishes to establish a home for the Roy Assaf Dance Company - a place that will allow the company to continue creating dances and sharing them with dance lovers.
The space, 135 square meters in size, is located in the Montefiore neighborhood - a neighborhood that began as a suburban project outside the city and has since become one of Tel Aviv’s “hearts”: a mix of residential streets, garages, cafés, workshops, and a diverse community of artists.
Our dream space in Montefiore has a red concrete floor, unusually high ceilings, and wide windows through which the sunrise sneaks in and northern winds drift inside. Once it was a dental laboratory, later a photography lab, and tomorrow - with your help - it will be a laboratory for the art of dance.
