About Kibbutz Nahal Oz and close-knit community
Kibbutz Nahal Oz is located just 0.5 miles from the Gaza border. Founded in 1953, our kibbutz is home to approximately 450 residents. As a symbol of Israeli resilience and pioneering agriculture, it is a small community focused on farming. The community sustains itself through a dairy farm, a poultry breeding farm, and crop fields, fulfilling its mission of ensuring thriving life and livelihood along the southern border.
Facing unprecedented loss, trauma, and destruction
On Saturday, October 7th, 2023, the day of the Kibbutz’s 70th-anniversary celebration, Nahal Oz woke up to the horrific attack, with over 250 terrorists that crossed the fence, brutally torturing, murdering, abducting, and massacring families, destroying the dairy farm and infrastructure, looting and halting life as we know it. 16 members were murdered, 8 kidnapped of whom one hostage is still held in Gaza.
The Nahal Oz community today
The Nahal Oz community remains scattered and displaced, with only a few dozen members returning to our beloved kibbutz. Our community is currently split across four locations throughout southern, central, and northern Israel. Despite the trauma and ongoing uncertainty we face, we remain committed to resilience and hope. We are dedicating every effort, resource, and plan to support our community’s strength and connectedness, with the strong wish to return to Nahal Oz as soon as the security situation permits.
What’s ahead for Nahal Oz
Join us as we rebuild and restore our home and future at Nahal Oz.
Join us in creating a safer, better and stronger kibbutz and community along our 4 major pillars –
Pillar 1 – Short-term steps to prepare for the return to the kibbutz
In preparation of the community’s return to the kibbutz in Otef Gaza, we need to make a concerted effort to renovate damaged homes, upgrade central communal buildings, fix infrastructure, and lay the foundation for a safe and smooth return of the community.
Pillar 2 – Educational Excellence – Voted as the community’s number 1 priority, we invest in top education for the community’s 150 children and youth, ages 0-18.
Kindergarten - A modern educational facility that will balance security needs from the border community location with creating a warm, engaging environment for young learners (ages 0-6). Afterschool Complex - A complex that includes 2 small, cozy buildings, with a connecting courtyard, serving 100+ children, elementary to high school, for informal education and social activities.
Pillar 3 - Strengthening Communal Cohesion & Resilience
Young Families Housing Complex – Building a new neighborhood tailored to attract new young people and families to the region, with 40 new housing units and facilities, toward expansion.
'Lev Ha'Kibbutz' - Renovation of three major buildings damaged on October 7 to create a central complex of indoor and outdoor spaces for community needs, in the heart of the kibbutz, that include a senior citizen center, multiuse dining hall, and more.
Pillar 4 - Economic Growth Engines for the Agricultural Community’s future
Dairy Farm – Strengthening Nahal Oz Dairy Farm, a major economic engine, with state-of-the-art renovation and automation, to increase milk production and financial resilience of the kibbutz.
Solar Energy Production - Construction of renewable power production and power storage facilities that will ensure operational continuity in times of emergency and financial resilience.
Sesame Farming and Production Plant – An agricultural-tech initiative, in collaboration with MaxSum, transforming into a global hub in specialized sesame growth and industry.
Join our efforts to re-settle, re-build and re-develop the Western Negev.
