The Megilot Dead Sea Rescue Unit is a volunteer-based team, operating tirelessly 24/7, 365 days a year, to save the lives of hikers in the northern Judean Desert and the Dead Sea region.
Recently, the unit received a state-of-the-art command vehicle to support its challenging missions. Now, we seek to take another vital step – acquiring a dedicated rescue vehicle, in memory of Staff Sergeant Omer Van Gelder z”l, who fell in battle in northern Gaza at the age of 22.
Among the 90 volunteers of the unit is Haggai Van Gelder – Omer’s father. Through this project, we wish to honor Omer’s memory in a way that reflects his values: giving, commitment, and love for people and the land.
The vehicle we aim to purchase will be a second-hand 4x4, in excellent condition, fully adapted for complex rescue missions in the field. Maintenance will be carried out by the unit’s volunteers at minimal cost, ensuring that every contribution goes directly toward saving lives.
We invite you to take part in this mission of remembrance – in Omer’s honor, in tribute to his father Hagai, and for the safety of all who hike in this region.
