Since November 2020, a civil war terrifies the Tigray region of Ethiopia, between the Tigrayan rebels and the Ethiopian federal government. Reports reveal a severe famine is threatening the lives of at least 400,000 people. Following a siege imposed by the Ethiopian government on the region, Tigray residents are cut off from food, medical assistance, water and electricity networks, communications and the Internet. In addition, the Ethiopian government has imposed severe restrictions on press coverage in the region.
In Israel, there are about 8,000 Ethiopians who are not citizens of Israel (as they are not Jews), part of whom come from the Tigray region. As the civil war in Ethiopia is escalating rapidly, we filed a request to the government to refrain from deporting Ethiopian citizens who are from the Tigray region and live in Israel. Fortunately, our demand was answered positively, and Tigrayans who live in Israel can be protected from deportation to Ethiopia if they file for asylum.
However, within the Tigray community there are women and men - among them survivors of human trafficking and torture - that because of their complex and vulnerable situation cannot turn to a lawyer and cannot file for asylum by themselves. We have set ourselves the goal of representing the most vulnerable, and make sure no one is deported to the heart of danger.
In light of the harsh news exposing the horrific situation in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, join us and donate today to help us protect of the rights of asylum seekers who cannot return to their homeland.
