Our Ariel is one of those kids who has eyes so bright that they look as if the sun, itself, is shining out from within them. Our beloved 9 year old son has a rare, aggressive cancerous brain cancer tumor.
Our family lives in Israel, on the border with the Gaza Strip. The heart breaking diagnosis of brain cancer- every parent’s nightmare - hit us like a sledgehammer in the middle of Operation Guardian of the Walls last May, as we were dodging rockets. Throughout that nationally and personally impossibly difficult time, we swore that we would do everything in our power to heal Ariel; that we would go to the ends of the earth for him.
By now, the nightmare of running back and forth to our saferooms, has subsided, but the nightmare of fighting this cancer to save his life, has become our every day and every night, reality.
Since his diagnosis, Ariel has struggled through long, painful, intensive treatments in Israel, up until two months ago. It was then that the doctors informed us that they had, unfortunately, reached a point where there was nothing more they could do for him in Israel. Thus, his rare strain of cancer, along with its rapid growth, impelled us to put life as we knew it on hold and fly to Miami, before his medical situation could worsen to an extent that it would prevent this trans-Atlantic journey.
Today, we are on the other side of the world, at Miami Cancer Institute, in Florida. We came here in order to enable him to receive a unique life-saving treatment that is available only here. However, this life saving treatment, Ariel’s only hope for recovery, is exorbitantly expensive and is not covered by medical insurance in Israel, nor with any insurance company.
The minute we landed Ariel’s first words were breathtaking: “Now I believe you really will go to the ends of the earth to save me”.
Ariel is a positive and happy child, whose infectious laugh immediately wins over people’s hearts. Despite his youth he already understands that life is a precious gift. Ariel needs your open heart and your generosity to show him that hope is not out of reach. We invite you to hold his little hand and walk along with him on this challenging, rocky path, to encourage and give him more strength on his way to full recovery.
