The Corona virus has hit and is affecting the lives of everyone. But for some it will hit extra hard. The asylum seeker community in Israel who are without legal status do not have the same basic safety net as the rest of Israelis – and they need our help.
A huge number of asylum seekers in Israel work in the hospitality industry – in hotels, restaurants and cafes. Many have lost their jobs or been put on unpaid leave. They have no health insurance (Kuppat Cholim) and no National Insurance (Bituach Leumi) and therefore are not eligible for any unemployment support from the government. With most of the community working in minimum wage jobs, most families have little to no savings and live pay-check to pay-check. Except that the next pay-check is not going to come.
