My name is Rachel Grella. I, along with my friends at Neve Yerushalayim, a Jewish seminary in Jerusalem, Israel, are raising funds for one of our beloved teachers, Raquel Kirszenbaum, a young 30's beautiful woman who is full of life and good energy for all those around her. Raquel and her husband Yeshaya are proud parents to their first daughter Batsheva Menucha, whom they had difficulty conceiving. After another long, unpromising effort to have another child, they were again blessed with another beautiful child, a baby girl who was born tonight, March 29, 2018, the night before the Jewish holiday of Passover. While Raquel was peacefully recovering post a strenuous labor, Yeshaya got a call from their neighbors that Raquel and Yeshaya's apartment was on fire and everything besides an assortment of clothing, the washing machine, oven and refrigerator, was totally burned and destroyed. Raquel and Yeshaya work incredibly hard to make ends meet. Unlike many of their friends, they didn't have the typical support from their families when starting their own, and with incomes in Israel infamously insufficient in comparison to the cost of living, they have been struggling to meet their basic needs. With a newborn girl, who is thankfully healthy, along with their two-and-a-half year old daughter, the last thing Raquel and Yeshaya can manage as a young couple is a home that is destroyed and the stress of figuring out how to manage all their immediate needs. To say this is an emergency is an understatement. Without question, many people suffer unthinkable nightmares and it is impossible to say which are more threatening than others. All we know is that Raquel is in the hospital, Yeshaya is on the brink of tears confronting his lost home and his fearful wife, and they are desperately attempting to figure out how to fulfill the most basic of need -- a stable place to live for their two infant daughters -- while simultaneously needing to allocate the minimal funds they have towards food and security for the family as a whole. We cannot think how we would handle news after giving birth to a baby that the home we so intently prepared is now burned and unlivable, and the stark reality of having to nurture a family without having the funds to do so. We are pleading for your compassion and assistance so that Raquel and Yeshaya can give the attention they need to their two infant children so they don't have to feel the stress of this situation.
