JACC is the only organization in Jerusalem supporting and protecting the rights of 3000 African asylum seekers who have escaped persecution and torture from Eritrea, Sudan and Ethiopia. The community relies on JACC for critical basic essentials and support to live. During corona as men and women lost their jobs and the ability to feed themselves and their families, JACC provided food packages to prevent starvation. JACC continues to help improve the quality of life of asylum seekers who live in Jerusalem.

JACC is the only organization in Jerusalem supporting and protecting the rights of 3000 African asylum seekers who have escaped persecution and torture from Eritrea, Sudan and Ethiopia. The organization began in 2007 when the Israeli government abandoned asylum seekers, including men, women and children in a park in Jerusalem. Local activists came to their help working with the African community leaders to meet the needs of the asylum seekers. Food, blankets and basic necessities were brought to aid the community. From these beginnings JACC was born, a joint initiative of asylum seekers and Israelis working together to safeguard and ensure the wellbeing of asylum seekers living in Jerusalem. In 2012 the volunteer initiative became a non-profit organization. As their programs grew, the need to have a physical presence became apparent. In 2014, the group rented a space for their programming, which has grown to be the focus of community programming which supports this vulnerable community, whilst providing a platform for self-advancement and development.

JACC through sheer determination has succeeded in creating a physical space for the community, fostered community leadership; created dialogue, connections and positive relations with other communities in the city. JACC’s impact stems from a small committed staff, together with over 100 volunteers.

JACC is working even more intensively during Corona.Growing unemployment caused by closures and other factors caused by the pandemic meant asylum seekers lost their jobs and ability to support themselves and buy food. JACC is responding by reaching out to their network to organize food drives, ensuring the community does not starve.

The most compelling evidence for JACC to receive recognition for their work comes from the asylum seekers themselves, as Priest Brhanemeskel Naizgi a community leader from Eritrea, living in Jerusalem explains, “JACC assists the community in many ways, and has also taught us how we can help and support each other within the community.”
