“Motherland”/ Reut Dagbar Agami
“Motherland” is a feature-length film dealing with the moment a family is notified about the death of their son during his military service, a moment in which their lives are torn into two – before and after. “Motherland” is a patriotic movie about the heavy price we are forced to pay for our very existence, and it gives the viewers a peek into the tough and complex Israeli reality.
My name is Reut, and I’m Israeli Film Director and a producer. I have a Bachelor of Communication Studies, B.A, and a Master of Cinema Studies, M.F.A (Tel Aviv University School of Film Direction).Up until now, I have directed short films, that have participated in hundreds of movie festivals around the world, and gained appreciation.
What is the Feature About
The feature is about the victims of war on the home front, bereaved children and siblings that their routine and entire life change as they hear about their brother’s death during military service. The feature gives us a peek into the complex world of the bereaved brothers and sisters, those who have lost a role model, a friend, and in many ways, also a part of themselves.
The inspiration for the screenplay emerged after I became aware of the personal story of Varda Pomerantz in a TV news item.
This unbelievable story, about the Head of Causalities Department in the IDF who had spent a lifetime knowing it is only a matter of time before bereavement would knock on her own door, had fascinated me. The fear for the life of ones son or daughter is every parent’s greatest fear. How did this fear become reality?
