My sister June (A"H) (חיה צביה מנחמה בת יצחק אריה ז"ל), passed away 10 years ago on Rosh Chodesh Sivan. The cancer she fought so bravely against, Ewing's Sarcoma, is a pediatric cancer, typically diagnosed in children. June, despite being an adult, was therefore lucky enough to be treated in the pediatric oncology unit at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC. We (her family and friends) were privileged to witness first-hand the work of the amazing people who dedicate their lives to treating children (and their families) who face the unimaginable challenges that come along with devastating diagnoses like the one my sister received.
When trying to determine the best way to mark this day, I came across an incredible project in Israel - Daycare of Dreams or גן החלומות, the first-of-it's kind daycare and rehabilitation center for children with cancer, which enables children with severely compromised immune systems to simply be kids - make friends, play games, and just have fun, all in a sterile environment. Please read more about this project here:
The staff at the gan have expressed the need for certain toys and other items that will help enhance the environment that has been created for these children. I will be using the money raised to purchase the items they have requested. After our parents passed away, June and I spoke many times about the dream of our whole family moving to Israel together - in large part to fulfill a dream of our father's - one he was sadly unable to realize himself. I can't think of a better way to honor the memory of my sister than by helping to deliver the wonderful care to others that she was lucky enough to receive, and right here in Israel. I hope you will join me in donating to this worthwhile cause.
