Jamilla is not only an authentic neighborhood Moroccan restaurant in the heart of Tel Aviv but also a cooperative endeavor between Joel Waik, a seasoned Jewish Israeli restaurateur, and Abdu El Araj, a Muslim Moroccan-born chef.
Joel and Abdu met ten years ago and together have created a vision of co-existence in the Middle East. This vision, brought two families out of the conflict that has ravaged the Middle East for the last 60 and two partners together to not just talk about co-existence but actually create it as an example for all to see.
Jamilla serves wonderful food and a powerful vision to its many Jewish and Muslim customers, but the Coronavirus and out of touch bureaucrats, have stretched this small business to its very limits.
The Government of Israel, like many countries around the world, stated that it would provide relief to small business owners like Joel and Abdu. Joel and Abdu applied twice but were rejected both times - and this for a loan meant to keep businesses like Jamilla afloat during these times. Bureaucrats have betrayed Joel and Abdu, leaving them no choice but to close the business. But, Joel and Abdu and their loyal customers have not given up yet. We are all turning to you whoever you may be - a customer, a friend, someone who cares about the people living in the Middle East, and those who may lose everything because of the Coronavirus to help. Jamilla needs to raise US$60,000 to cover the losses of the past lockdown months. Can you assist? No donation is too small (or too large)!
