Dear Family and Friends,

On November 14, Shabbat Parshat Chayei Sarah, we celebrated my Bar-Mitzvah at home in Ra’anana together with my parents, siblings and a few relatives. Although we had planned, and continued to hope, that we would be celebrating in person with you and many other guests, we are trying our best to find new and creative ways to commemorate this special event in my life.

There are many families here in Israel that don’t have enough food to eat, which is why I decided that instead of giving me bar mitzvah gifts, I would prefer for people to consider participating in my bar mitzvah charitable campaign by making a donation to Leket Israel.

Sincerely yours,

Dov Bill Rubinstein

About Leket Israel

Leket Israel, Israel's National Food Bank and premier food rescue organization, collects and rescues 40 million pounds of healthy, surplus food annually that would have gone to waste, and distributes it to those in need. The pandemic has dramatically increased demand for food assistance. Over 20% of Israelis are now unemployed (up from 4% in March), with many families requesting food assistance for the first time. Over the past 8 months, Leket Israel has provided 1.8 million fresh meat meals and nearly 31 million lbs. of nutritious produce — an 18% increase over the same period last year. But this is not enough.

During March, Israel’s catering sector came to a halt overnight, cutting to zero Leket’s sources of excess, prepared food. Determined not to abandon those in greatest need, the organization moved within a week from a food rescue to food purchase model, providing at its peak 11,000 people with a daily hot meal; often delivered directly to their home by a Leket staff member. As a consequence, we are witnessing unprecedented demand on our resources, with many new poor seeking help from nonprofit agencies for the first time.
