Leket Israel, the National Food Bank, is the leading food rescue organization in Israel. Unique among all other organizations that serve the poor in Israel and food banks worldwide, Leket Israel’s sole focus is rescuing healthy, surplus food and delivering it to those in need through partner nonprofit organizations. This project in particular means a lot not only to my family and me, but to my bat mitzvah. As part of my bat mitzvah, and the fact that it falls out right before the holiday of Shavuot, my mom and I have been learning Megillat Ruth together and when we stumbled upon the story of Ruth, the mitzvah of leaving the leket for the poor brought the organization and efforts of Leket to light and really spoke to me.
