MY STORY
When my grandpa, Albert Nackab A'H (Avraham ben Pauline) fell and broke his hip during Pesach 2015, my family and I thought that we lost him. He had severe heart issues and the injury only made things worse.
My grandpa was my family’s everything - our captain. The thought of losing him was unimaginable. We knew his fate wasn’t in our hands, but rather Hashem’s. And so like so many others, we turned to tefillah and as is customary when someone is ill, we split up the book of Tehillim amongst all the family members. One hundred and fifty perakim divided between his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Our goal was to complete the sefer of tehillim every single day. While any tefillah and every tefillah matters, there is a power in the completion of a sefer.
Every day message reminders would go out to each family member to read their designated perakim. But I was worried. Maybe someone would forget, maybe they would feel guilty that they couldn’t read on a specific day. I wasn't willing to take the risk of the sefer not being completed, so I quietly took upon myself to read the entire sefer of tehillim each day for months. The experience was incredible and the miracles I saw were extraordinary.
There was one particular night. We thought my grandpa was out of the woods, we had just seen him earlier that day. Suddenly the phone rang and our hearts dropped. It seemed that that night would be his last.
Our entire family met at a local hospital and the pain we all felt was palpable. There is no preparing to lose a loved one. Everything was so sudden. What would we do if we lost him? Had we lost him that night, I think we may have mentally and emotionally lost several of my family members with him.
I grabbed hold of my tehillim book and started praying with all my heart and soul. I stood by his bedside and poured every ounce of myself into every word. I then came to perek 118, pasuk 17 and tears began to stream down my cheeks
״לא אמות כי אחיה, ואספר מעשה יה.״
I kept reading that pasuk (verse) over and over and over again; each time with more fervor and as I read it I kept thinking in my mind, “Please Hashem, don’t allow him to die. Allow him to live and by granting him his life now - he will sing your praises and share the great miracle you did for him.”
Miraculously, he passed the night and we had him in our lives for another 5 months until Hashem called him back.
Only a few days after my grandpa fell, I had a dream about Abraham’s Legacy, an app that would serve as a tool to unite not just one family in tefillah but an entire world by allowing people across the globe to collectively complete the book of tehillim minutes in real time. I didn’t know how I would bring Abraham’s Legacy into fruition. I didn’t have the funds, but I certainly had the drive, passion and most importantly Hashem on my side.
I realized shortly after that evening in the hospital when we thought he lost him, that Hashem had a plan for me and that He did in fact listen intently to my tefillot that night. I realized an entirely new meaning of that incredible pasuk.
״לא אמות כי אחיה,
While we were fortunate that he lived that night, we knew the end was not far from coming. Hashem, in his amazing way, was comforting me through that pasuk and reminding me. "Orly, although your grandpa's time may be coming to an end - he lives in you, he lives in his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. By living his legacy, you are keeping his memory and his name alive and well
ואספר מעשה יה.״
How would I keep his memory alive? “By sharing the miracles that Hashem performed those final months of his life; miracles that I saw when engrossed in the reading and internalizing of tehillim.”
When my grandfather passed several months later I made a commitment to share this story and to turn the dream of the Abraham’s Legacy - Tehillim Together app into a reality.
I didn't have the funds, but I knew that it was my responsibility to make it happen. When my Nana shared with me that my grandpa would constantly tell her how much comfort it brought him to see me standing by his bedside engrossed in tehillim, I knew that this was a calling and I would make it happen.
Thankfully I did just that, but the journey to unleash and remind the world not simply of the power in reciting tehillim, but internalizing it - is just beginning...
WHY TEFILLAH?
Tefillah has the ability to alter our reality; it changes us and when we change, our world changes. My grandfather may not have been the most religious man, but he believed deeply in the power of tehillim and I recall him having a book of Tehillim by his bed that he read daily. It’s only fitting that the legacy he leaves behind is a legacy of tehillim that unites.
WHY ABRAHAM’S LEGACY?
When the siren went off the morning of October 7th, all of our worlds changed. Confusion, pain, sadness, anger, fear, hopelessness, shock, numbness. These emotions ran wild in the hearts of all members of Am Yisrael far and wide. As if October 7th wasn’t hard enough, the morning of October 8th we woke up to a new reality. All the things that we were working on, the plans we had, the ambitions we were pursuing suddenly seemed trivial. Everything froze as reality set in. What should I do? How can I help? How do I continue? The questions filled our minds as we set out calling and reaching out for every volunteer opportunity we saw. The overwhelming feeling of it all was more than we could bear. Everywhere we turned were images of suffering.
I found myself breaking down in tears randomly throughout the day and asking myself what can I do to protect Am Yisrael?! While I was unable to stand on the front lines, I realized that my prayers accompany each and every soldier, protecting them as they enter one of the hardest battles of their lives, a battle to protect us all.
I realized that just as our soldiers are out there 24/7, we need an army of spiritual warriors to be praying every second of every day until each and every one returns safely. And so I turned to people from around the world to accept the call to become a Warrior - a Tehillim Warrior by taking upon themselves a 5-min window every single day to read Tehillim with the global world so we could have books upon books completed. Each person was paired with a soldier or hostage to pray for and we set out to create the 1st Unit of Spiritual Tehillim Warriors, each unit comprising 288 souls on 24/7 watch.
After all, when a person's life hangs in the balance, every prayer counts.
I was touched to see so many people reach out willing to answer the call and gladly sign up as a warrior.
Everyone needs to give from their energy source and for me I needed to focus on prayer and the unifying power it holds. This incredible program only made me more focused and motivated to bring Abraham’s Legacy to a whole new level in a way that can unify the members of the Jewish nation irregardless of religious observance level.
