I like to hike, but I am not a ‘hiker’, with my family we have hiked around the DC area, I’ve done parts of the Appalachian Trail with camp and I have been hiking in Western Ireland with Transy and I have definitely done the most of my hiking here in Israel with Otzma.
As stated previously, I have the great opportunity to join other supporters of Akim on Akims annual Trek. This year the trek will be taking place in the Carmel Forest which is just north of Haifa, this trek is especially special because the forest devastated after a fire in 2010 and I will have a chance to explore the forest and see how it has regrown since then.
Akim is a non-profit organization that promotes the welfare of persons with intellectual disabilities and developmental impairments who are of all ages and levels of functioning. It is a huge organizaton that has done a lot to help people with special needs. Akim runs many hostels for residents to live a normal life in and there are also multiple activities that they can particpate in. For example, I volunteer in an after school program of special needs children and also in a art club with some of the Hostels residents. As an aspiring art therapist who wants to specifically work with special needs this is all very important to me and I want ro help Akim flourish as much as I can.
However, I need a lot of help to go on this Trek. The Trek starts in TWO SUNDAYS (April21-23) and I decided to raise $1,800.00 and I cant do it without the help of you! I'm really excited for this hike and I hope that I reach above and beyond my goal!
