From his first day at Boys Town Jerusalem in Year 7, Joel was a loner. His dismal marks and indifference isolated him from interacting with his classmates and teachers. Until the day his homeroom teacher guessed the truth: “Your father hits you, doesn’t he?” the teacher gently asked. Closing his eyes, Joel whispered, “Yes. I called the police once. But everything’s OK now, really.” Comforting the boy, his teacher immediately set into action a team of the school’s social workers, rabbis and counselors to aid Joel and his traumatized, poverty-stricken family.
