It\\\\\'s time for the public to take back control of the web - Help fund The Institute for Digital Protection! We could never have imagined such a turbulent time in our lives. We started hunting down fake profiles and liars online a year ago, because we saw how easy it was to hurt people online. The more cries for help we received, the more our understanding and our concern deepened. We understood the challenge that faced us required long term work. So we banded together - researchers, activists, and web experts, and founded a civilian research project, which works for the public good through a crowdsourced research platform. Our goal is to change the balance of power online - educate and empower citizens, and demand the state and technology companies what we all deserve. We want to take back control from the tech companies - to the public. That was the moment our lives changed. In a year of nonstop work, we’ve published research that shows the way in which every one of us is vulnerable online, alongside the lack of a proper response by tech companies and the state. Our work reached dozens of publications in Israel and internationally, with over 200 items published including in The New York Times, NBC, and Vice - as well as in Brazil, China and France. Simultaneously, we began exposing attackers and how they work. We took down two foreign influence networks operating to recruit and spread chaos. We exposed a network of hundreds of fake profiles, supporting politicians as well as sex offenders. We responded to events in real time: during the escalation in May, we tracked and took down over 100 groups where lynch mobs were organized against helpless Palestinian civilians. We helped women who were harassed online, and assisted activists who were under attack. We disproved dozens of fake news stories, launched an Arabic version of the FakeReporter platform, and took down Covid-denying groups. We cultivated connections with Facebook and Twitter, academics and expoerts, organizations and other institutions from the field, security forces and decision makers, and recruited tens of volunteers - who work alongside our professional research team. Thanks to our unique operation model, thousands of citizens report suspicious behaviour or attacks they’ve seen online. Our researchers use unique tools and their experience to analyze the reports, conduct deep research, map the offenders, and our campaign team then takes the information to make the bad actors pay a public price - in order to change the rules of the game for the citizens’ favour. We’ve worked day and night on a shoestring budget, and not it’s time to grow. We now understand how big the phenomenon is and how much damage it causes to people. Extortions, fake news, violence, harrasment, foreign intervention, moneyed and political interests, disinformation - social networks are a major part our lives - but tech companies ignore the harm they cause, while the government hesitates to act. This is why we’re forming hte Institue for Digital Protection. The institute will operate for the public interest - in educating the public, in developing new tools for better civilian research, a lobbying department - to change the way the state responds to online threats, and our research department - The FakeReporter - will continue operating. Now, we need your help. Though we’ve many offers for financial support - we are not interested in owing ourselves to clients with a financial incentive. We want to stay committed to the public, to democratic principles and human rights - as well as being funded by the public.Every Dollar you donate will help expose the next influence network, fight disinformation, and protect activists, create a safe environment online for all. The web belongs to us - it influences our lives, and we can’t keep being defensless online. It’s time to take back control and give it to the public - where it belongs.Donate now!
