Michael Havin walks (hobbles?) for AKIM-Jerusalem Miles for Smiles 2016

On May 19, 2016, I will be walking the final day only of a three-day, 70+-kilometer fundraising trek in the upper Galil called 'Miles for Smiles', which is organized by, and for the benefit of, AKIM-Jerusalem.

About the Campaign

AKIM-Jerusalem provides ‘in-the-community’ housing for people with intellectual disabilities and other developmental disorders of all ages and with varying levels of functionality.  At the moment, it operates 3 hostels and 17 apartments in Jerusalem, housing close to 170 residents.  Its clients are referred by local and regional welfare agencies and the large majority of them originate from low-income families.  More than half of the residents are approaching 50 and the parents of many of them are no longer alive.  Although part of their care is funded by the Ministry of Welfare, leisure time activities, further education and specialized para-medical services such as physiotherapy and speech therapy, are not covered by the Government.  In addition, the costs of new construction, renovation of buildings and equipment acquisition are also only partially Government-funded.

As a family, we have (modestly) supported AKIM-Jerusalem financially for a number years.  To our minds, in-the-community housing offers not only enhanced dignity and self-respect for the residents, but also inevitably enriches the lives of the communities of which they form part.  Beyond that, we have always been especially appreciative of the professional, fiscally transparent and financially lean way in which the organization is operated, and feel secure in the knowledge that all money raised ends up exactly where it is supposed to be.
