As many of you know, I’ve been obsessed with Israel for my entire life, and have often referred to Israel as my second home. This deep love for Israel is what motivated me to both intern for Abraham Fund and to run this 10k despite my terrible running skills. The Israeli Declaration of Independence states that "full and equal citizenship" will be provided to all Israeli citizens, including Arab citizens, 1.5 million people that represent over 20% of the population. Over 60 years later, the gap between this founding vision and the reality of the country's Arab citizens is large. Arab citizens suffer from discrimination in many sectors of Israeli society, including unequal opportunities for jobs, education, and even protection from the police.
I began interning at Abraham Fund in January, and am impressed by the range of projects provided. We provide leadership training for Arab women; improved Arabic classes in the north of Israel in order to create a more positive image of Arabs amongst Jewish children; and worked together with the police and arab society in order to create trust between the sides. The projects are endless. Together with Abraham Fund, join me in working towards a stronger Israel; one that is a truly democratic and just state.
